The fourth abode. Regarding the Commentary's statement "Born from the sacred teaching": This cites the sūtra and explains the name. From "much hearing" onward, the Commentary cites a treatise to explain it, namely the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, fascicle six, which says: "'Perfuming through much hearing' means giving rise to much hearing regarding the Mahāyāna. Having heard the Dharma and its meanings, it perfumes the continuous basis of mind and mental factors. Those of little hearing have no way to enter this direct realization." The statement "The outflow-free teaching of equal outflow (niṣyanda)" refers to the perfuming agent. This flows forth from the Tathāgata, flowing from the superior flow of tathatā as this Dharma teaching; hence it is called outflow-free. Because the teaching resembles wisdom, it is called "equal outflow." The statement "Because it gives rise to that wisdom": Wisdom is that which is produced, namely the wisdom of a bodhisattva of the fourth abode. Because of producing this wisdom, it is named the Abode of Noble Birth. Treatises such as the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi are generally identical in meaning. Next, citing the text below, it again sets forth two producing agents. From "the above three meanings" onward, it concludes their common and restricted aspects. The producing agent is restricted; including the locus of production, it is termed common, because relying on the producing wisdom, one abides here. From "Also, capable of explaining" onward, it distinguishes the reason for the three names. The three factors form two layers of subject and object: the Buddha is that which is capable of explaining; the teaching and the dharmadhātu are both that which is explained. The teaching is the signifier, and the dharmadhātu is the signified. One must possess these three for the meaning of "birth" to be complete; thus they are brought forth interchangeably before and after. From "born from these three" onward, it concludes the name of "Noble Birth."
