Regarding the commentary's statement, "The four above mostly correspond to the ten thickets of the ninth bhūmi": the first subsumes two, meaning the single word 'sentient beings' corresponds to the first, the thicket of sentient beings' minds, and the two words 'receiving birth' correspond to the ninth, the thicket of receiving birth. Second, 'the manifest arising of afflictions' corresponds to that second thicket of afflictions. Third, 'continuity of habitual propensities' subsumes two thickets: first, habitual propensities are seeds, which corresponds to the eighth, the thicket of latent dispositions; second, it corresponds to the tenth, the thicket of habitual propensities. Fourth, 'the upāya of practice' subsumes six thickets: first, it subsumes the third, karma; second, it subsumes the fourth, faculties; third, it subsumes the fifth, understanding; fourth, it subsumes the sixth, dispositions; fifth, it subsumes the seventh, aspirations; sixth, it subsumes the distinct three groups, since the thicket of the three groups is explained on the basis of faculties, understanding, dispositions, and aspirations. The explanation already includes them in brief, meaning that the vehicles are faculties, understanding, dispositions, and aspirations, and performing karma is karma and the entered dharma gates. It is also the three groups. As for the statement 'and skillfulness', it is because the six thickets subsumed under upāya in this sūtra all engage in phenomena as upāya.
