Regarding the commentary's phrase “possessing profound merit is difficult practice”: the *Yogācāra[-bhūmi]* has three kinds of diligence of difficult practice: If bodhisattvas continuously separate from all notions of clothing, notions of food and drink, notions of bedding, and notions of their own bodies, and uninterruptedly cultivate wholesome dharmas without ever being lax, this is named the first diligence of difficult practice. If bodhisattvas carry out such diligence to the end of their life-span (nikāya-sabhāga), at all times without ever becoming lax or neglectful, this is named the second diligence of difficult practice. If bodhisattvas equally and thoroughly penetrate what corresponds to merit, being neither lax nor hurried, free from inverted views, and accomplishing diligence that can bring about benefit, this is named the third diligence of difficult practice. The present text contains all three: not being lax for long kalpas, how much more so for one's whole life, which is the second; not regretting for a single thought, that is, uninterruptedly letting go of the body, which is the first; and from “rejoicing in oneself” onward, which is the third. In the previous practice, the initial separation from faults is also this first [diligence].
