Regarding the Commentary's line "Now, using wisdom to perceive and discern": below, it shows the reason why he is not deluded or confused. "Like a person who perceives a thief or a thieving dog" comes from the "Chapter on Heterodoxy and Orthodoxy" in the Southern Recension of the Nirvāṇa-sūtra—in the Northern Recension, it is also the "Chapter on the Tathāgata Nature," that is, the seventh fascicle: just as when a person perceives a thief, the thief can do nothing. Further, it is based on Kāśyapa's question about relying on four kinds of persons. He objected, saying: "World-Honoured One! If māras and their kind can even transform themselves into the body of a Buddha, how much more can they not produce the form of an arhat and so on?" The Buddha said: "Good son! If you give rise to doubt about what I have preached, you should not even accept it, how much less such as these. Therefore, you should skillfully distinguish and know. Good son! For example, take a thieving dog entering a person's house at night. If the household's servant maids detect it, they immediately drive it away and scold it: 'Get out quickly! If you do not get out, I will take your life.' When the thieving dog hears this, it immediately leaves and does not return. From now on, you all should also subdue Pāpīyān like this. You should speak these words: 'Pāpīyān! You should not now create such an appearance. If you deliberately do so, I will bind you with the five bonds.' When Māra hears this, he will then turn back and leave. Like that thieving dog, he will never return again." Below, it then expounds at length the marks of what the Buddha preaches and what Māra preaches. This text merely enjoins perceiving and discerning.
