The Commentary's fifth point, "Not the same as Devadatta": The Buddha taught the four reliances in order to eliminate the four evil desires of monks. Devadatta added one to make five, namely adding the abstention from butter, salt, fish, and meat, and moreover making them all for the duration of one's life. Although there were similarities in what was said, because his original intent was not wholesome, [they were not the same]. Fascicle four of the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya states: "Devadatta seduced the monks with five erroneous dharmas: the first is to beg for food for the duration of one's life; the second is to wear rag robes for the duration of one's life; the third is to sit in the open air for the duration of one's life; the fourth is not to eat butter or salt for the duration of one's life; and the fifth is not to eat fish or meat for the duration of one's life."
