疏「識以了別」者，《俱舍》云「識謂各了別。論云『了別名識』，此有六種了別不同，故名為識。」《雜集》云「了別相是識相。由此識故，了別色聲香味觸法等種種境界。」

In the Commentary, "consciousness takes discerning [as its characteristic]": the Kośa says, "Consciousness refers to individual discernment. The treatise says: 'Discernment is called consciousness'; this has six distinct types of discernment, hence it is called consciousness." The Abhidharmasamuccayavyākhyā says, "The characteristic of discernment is the characteristic of consciousness. Due to this consciousness, one discerns various objects such as form, sound, smell, taste, tangibles, and dharmas."
