From the commentary's "This sūtra speaks of six..." below is the third [section], explaining the text. Within this are two parts: first, a general clarification of presence and absence; afterward, from "The word 'space'..." below, it explains them individually, relying extensively on the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi. Since there are six unconditioned dharmas, there are six segments. First, the wording explaining space entirely follows the intent of the commentary on the Baifa [lun]. That is, the meaning in the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi where it is provisionally posited on the basis of dharmatā. That treatise first explains dharmatā, stating: "It refers to tathatā revealed by emptiness and selflessness; it is neither existent nor non-existent, the path of mind and speech is cut off, and it is neither one nor different from all dharmas, and so forth. Being the true reality of dharmas, it is called dharmatā. Being free from all obstructions, it is called space." Interpretation: When that treatise explains that dharmatā is empty, it only says that it is free from all obstructions. The Baifa [lun] additionally takes up external space, saying that it is revealed by the absence of material things; hence the Abhidharmakośa states: "Here, space is unobstructive."
