Regarding the commentary’s “The meaning of watching over and turning back is seen in the Mao Shi”: The Shi says, “Father begot me, / Mother nurtured me. / Caressed me, fed me, / Brought me up, reared me, / Watched over me, returned to me, / Coming and going, held me to the bosom.” Zheng Xuan’s annotation says: “Gu means to look at; fu means to turn back. It means that although the child’s departure is near at hand, [the parent] still turns back to look at every step.” Another annotation on the Shi says: “’Watching over and turning back’ means watching with concern and returning to them.” Now, the bodhisattva toward all sentient beings is also like this.
