55.38

疏「十地已還」下，釋佛無等等之言。謂過下故為無等，以齊上故重言於等。言「欲顯佛佛等正覺」者，此遮復難。謂有問言：何不但說無等？何用重言齊等？故今答云：以諸賢聖望於下地皆名無等。而更有上，猶未上齊故。今唯佛方能等佛覺，以究竟正覺同也。

Regarding the Commentary's statement: 'Below the tenth bhūmi...' downwards, this explains the phrase 'equal to the unequalled' of the Buddha. That is, surpassing what is below, it is 'unequalled'; because of being equal to what is above, it repeats the word 'equal.' Regarding the words 'intending to reveal that buddhas are equally correctly awakened to buddhas,' this refutes an objection. That is, someone asks: 'Why not merely say "unequalled"? What need is there to repeat the word "equal"?' Therefore it now answers: 'Because all the worthy ones and sages, in relation to lower bhūmis, are all called unequalled. Yet there is still what is superior, and they are not yet equal to what is above. Here, only buddhas are able to equal a buddha's awakening, because their ultimate correct awakening is identical.'
