Under the Commentary's statement, "Now, the ocean water and kalpa-fire...," the second part harmonizes and explains the sūtra text; this is clear. Under the Commentary's statement, "Exert yourselves!", it concludes with an exhortation and adduces proof. Adducing proof refers to fascicle 6 of the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra]. Because of clarifying that bodhisattvas neglect infractions to protect the Dharma, Bodhisattva Kāśyapa said to the Buddha: "World-Honoured One, for a bodhisattva-mahāsattva such as this, who is extremely slack regarding the precepts, are the precepts originally received still intact or not?" The Buddha said: "Good son, you should not speak like this now. Why? The precepts originally received are not lost from their original state. If there is an infraction, he should immediately repent; having repented, he is pure." And it goes on to say: "Good son, one who is slack regarding the vehicle is called slack; one who is slack regarding the precepts is not called slack. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva who does not give way to laxity or pride regarding this Great Vehicle is said to uphold the precepts; in order to protect the True Dharma, he bathes himself in the water of the Great Vehicle. Therefore, although a bodhisattva appears to break precepts, he is not called slack." Explication: The intent here takes only the Great Vehicle as the vehicle; the intent of the present Commentary's text also takes the True Dharma of the Great Vehicle as the vehicle, which is why it concludes with the exhortation, "keep your mind on the essentials of the Dharma." Zhan (旃) is equivalent to zhi (之).
