Regarding the Commentary's: "Second, concluding summary of generating the aspiration [to awakening]", the text of the Commentary has four parts: 1. A brief explanation. 2. From "And the Treatise..." onward, determining the Treatise's explanation. 3. From "The previous refers to this..." onward, determining that the Treatise's references to the text differ: the previous refers to this concluding text, wishing to gather the previous by the latter; here it refers to the previous general clause, wishing to clarify that the previous gathers the latter. Both "general" and "conclusion" carry the general meaning, so it concludes: "The general gathers the specific." 4. Regarding "Furthermore, simply saying 'generating the mind'": it resolves an objection. The Treatise has two questions and two answers, and the Commentary likewise has two sections. The first question says: "Previously, one sought Buddha-knowledge; why does it now only speak of 'generating such a mind' and not 'generating knowledge'?" Therefore, it now answers: "Because the mind is general, it already includes knowledge—knowing, abandoning, realizing, and cultivating." Second, from "also gathers..." onward, there is also a question: "There are separately various virtues; why does it merely say 'generating such a mind'?" The answer says: "The mind is also general, encompassing all virtues; thus, it does not separately cite the dharmas assisting the path, and so forth." One might also ask: "Since the mind is general and includes knowing, abandoning, realizing, and cultivating, why did the previous text not seek the Buddha-mind?" Because of two meanings: first, the previous was that which is sought, while this is that which seeks; second, at the stage of the fruit, knowledge is prominent and mind is unknowable. Regarding the Commentary's: "Explaining by what cause one generates such a mind": this is the text of the Treatise. Here, the questioning intent in the Commentary is slightly abbreviated; it should say: "From 'Third, with great compassion...' onward, it explains by what cause." Next, it should further say: "Meaning, by what cause does one generate such a mind?" Here, by first outlining the headings of the text, it easily explains the meaning. From "The meaning is..." onward, the Commentary explains the Treatise's text, citing two sūtras to establish the intent of the Treatise.
