Regarding the commentary's phrase "If so": below, it resolves objections sequentially to establish the preceding meaning. First the objection, then the response. The initial objection also derives from the intention in the Śataśāstra: / "The outsider said: Since you have already spoken of practicing wholesomeness, you should not further speak of stopping evil. / The insider said: The characteristic of stopping is cessation, while the characteristic of practice is doing; the two are contradictory. Therefore, speaking of wholesome practice does not subsume stopping evil. / The outsider said: That is indeed so. I do not say that stopping evil and practicing wholesomeness share a single characteristic, but merely that stopping evil is itself wholesome practice, and thus it is wholesome practice. One should not further speak of stopping evil." / Explanation: This is precisely identical to the present sūtra: killing is evil, and abstaining from killing is wholesome; therefore, within the moral code there is also abstaining from killing, and within the precepts that gather wholesome dharmas there is also non-killing, making the two difficult to distinguish. Regarding the commentary's phrase "Ancient explanations": below is the response. It first relates former explanations; the second explanation also derives from the intention in the Śataśāstra. Where it was previously cited that giving is the dharma of stopping stinginess, the concluding resolution in the answer states: / "Furthermore, for people whose taints are exhausted, whose stinginess and greed are already gone, what evil is stopped when they give? Or there are people who, although practicing giving, do not stop their stingy minds; even if they can stop it, nevertheless taking wholesome practice as the fundamental basis, giving is a wholesome practice." / Explanation: The intention of this treatise clarifies that although giving involves stopping evil, it takes wholesome practice as its primary focus; although the moral code involves active adherence, it takes stopping evil as its primary focus. Thus, in terms of primary and auxiliary functions, they are divided into two clusters.
