Regarding the commentary's "Second, Guangtong of the Later Wei" and so forth: this is the second master. The primary presentation consists of two parts: first, clarifying what he inherited; second, revealing the doctrine he established. Now for the first. As for "he inherited and studied under Tripiṭaka Master Fotuo": Fotuo was a native of the Western Regions. Among five fellow students, four had already attained the Way. When he wished to sacrifice his life in pursuit of it, a friend said: "The Way requires the meeting of conditions; it cannot be forced. You have affinity with the Eastern Land. There are two disciples there: if you succeed in delivering them, you will surely attain the Way." When Fotuo first arrived there, it was during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Later Wei; he initially stayed in Yunzhou and was deeply revered. When he first arrived, he was offered hospitality by a certain Kang family, and at night firelight filled the room. When Emperor Xiaowen moved the capital to Luoyang, Fotuo followed him, and the emperor founded Shaolin Monastery for him. Knowing that in later times it would be taken over by Zetian, he pointed to the water, causing it to breach the ridge of the Western Mountains and flow through. Of his two disciples, one was Dhyāna Master Chou, who attained the Way, and the other was Guangtong. Hence it is said: "Master Chou untamed the tigers in the eastern valley; Fotuo pointed to the water and made it flow westward."
