Regarding the commentary's phrase "Within the preceding are four divisions": the commentary text divides into three: first, the general outline; second, from "this stage cultivates dhyāna" onward, the explanation; third, from "it can also" onward, assigning them to the three minds. Regarding the commentary's phrase "then it differs from the preceding two stages": the commentary draws upon that sūtra to distinguish the present text. Regarding the words "further using the ten minds": that which can be mindful refers to the initial ten minds of this stage, because within dhyāna concentration their desire and seeking are profound. That which is minded refers to the ten minds of the second stage: because they wish to seek dhyāna, they turn back to be mindful of pure precepts; because precepts are pure, they thereupon attain dhyāna concentration. Next, it cites the *Yogācārabhūmi* to prove and establish the above meaning: it first clarifies that which is minded, and later, from "further, due to the other ten" onward, this is that which can be mindful. The arising of these ten minds is before entering the stage; when their cultivation completes the inferior and middling degrees, one has not yet entered this stage. Thus, only when the superior grade is completed does one enter the third stage; the third stage is precisely the dwelling in the higher mind (adhicitta-vihāra).
