Regarding the commentary's "The last two concern sickness": the first is sickness in youth, and the second is sickness in old age. As for "the cause of sickness": pleasant feeling generates greed, so sexual indulgence exhausts the bone marrow and rich flavors scorch the intestines—how could one not become sick? Painful feeling generates anger, so fury and resentment fill the heart and chest, without regard for danger and disaster—how could one not become sick? Delusion is foolish darkness, not recognizing right from wrong, falling into errors at every move—how could one not become sick? In the ninth, however, old age is also a cause of sickness, yet it is not called a cause because old age is itself sickness: that is, when age is advanced and the faculties are decrepit, the form changes and vigor declines, eating and drinking are impossible, breath and strength are deficient, sitting and standing are extreme suffering, and little of life remains—how is this not sickness? How much more so when adventitious illness is added, making it difficult to recover health: a withered willow beset by frost has no day to flourish anew; a fallen leaf following the wind, what hope has it of returning to the tree?
