61.35

疏「前滅覺觀」下，通妨。妨云：謂上滅覺觀，今復云無，豈非重復？答意云：前舉覺觀是此所滅，云顯所治。此言無者，不同初禪用此覺觀以為能治，云顯能治無。遠公云：「前滅覺觀，如呼滅諦以為無染。此無覺觀，如呼道諦以為無染故。」

Regarding the commentary's "Having previously extinguished vitarka and vicāra" downward, it resolves an objection. The objection says: If above one extinguished vitarka and vicāra, and now again says 'without [them]', is this not redundant? The point of the answer says: Previously mentioning vitarka and vicāra indicated what is extinguished here, showing what is countered. Here, saying 'without' differs from the first dhyāna using this vitarka and vicāra as the counteragent; it shows that the counteragent is absent. Master Huiyuan says: "The previous extinguishing of vitarka and vicāra is like calling the truth of cessation 'undefiled'. This 'without vitarka and vicāra' is like calling the truth of the path 'undefiled'."
