Regarding the commentary's 'Fourth, there are four states of mind learning the practice of samādhi,' this differs from the subsequent attainment of concentration. Explaining calm abiding (śamatha) in terms of abbreviation, the Vijñaptimātra says in explaining sleep: 'Taking dullness and abbreviation as its nature; abbreviation distinguishes it from waking states, dullness distinguishes it from concentration. In concentration, it is abbreviated but not dull; thus tying the cognitive object to a single object is the meaning of abbreviation. Between abbreviated and non-abbreviated, the abbreviated mind is gain, and the non-abbreviated is loss. Between distracted and non-distracted, distraction is loss, and non-distraction is gain.'
