Regarding the commentary's 'If combining form and existence,' 'existence' corresponds to formlessness; now combining them into one, namely the upper two realms, they are generally named the bond of existence, hence forming four bonds. The 'four floods' are as explained in the first and second bhūmis. The above distinguishes combining and dividing. Second, from 'The bond of view is extinguished first' onward, it explains the sūtra. Thus, among the five, the first one is severed by the path of seeing, and is already separated by two bhūmis, hence it is called 'first.' From 'The treatise says' onward, it first cites the treatise. Then, from 'Meaning afflictions' onward, it explains the treatise. The statement 'extinguished together with the seeds of the cognitive obscuration of the given bhūmi' is because cognitive obscurations are severed separately on each bhūmi, both seeds and active manifestations being severed. At the beginning of this bhūmi it says, 'This bhūmi severs the obscuration of dull darkness,' referring to the innate portion within the cognitive obscuration, unfolding into two ignorances and their gross heaviness (dauṣṭhulya). Gross heaviness is precisely the seeds. The essence of the seeds and active manifestations of the cognitive [obscuration] is ignorance, hence it is called the residual impression of ignorance. The residual impression is precisely gross heaviness. As for innate afflictions, in terms of active manifestations, they are also severed separately on each bhūmi, and are therefore extinguished together with the seeds and active manifestations of cognitive obscurations. Affliction seeds are permanently severed only upon reaching the vajra-[like concentration]. Here it is spoken in terms of active manifestations, and thus can be called 'extinguished.' In terms of seeds, it is only said to be 'attenuated'; because active manifestations are severed, the seeds accordingly become attenuated. Furthermore, because active manifestations are severed, they also receive the name 'attenuated.'
