Regarding the commentary's: "First, excellence in forbearance and gentleness": Being able to endure harassment from others is called forbearance. Being able to protect and attend to others is spoken of as gentleness; because of gentleness and forbearance, conditions cannot shake them. Both reject evil, and so are called shame (apatrapā). Solely venerating the precepts and goodness, it is therefore called conscience (hrī). From "meaning inwardly cherishing" downward, the characteristics of conscience and shame are explained. Conscience is being ashamed before heaven, and so one does not deceive the hidden; shame is being ashamed before others, and so one does not deceive the manifest. "Not incurring censure and defamation" is precisely protecting others.
