Regarding the Commentary's statement, "(4) seeking a deviant liberation subsumes the latter four doors": This means not recognizing true liberation and seeking the sufferings of the three realms and so on as liberation; hence it is called 'seeking a deviant [liberation]'. True liberation has four characteristics: (1) the characteristic of freedom from all suffering; (2) the characteristic of the unconditioned; (3) the characteristic of being far removed from defilement; and (4) the characteristic of transcending the mundane world. These four are the bliss, permanence, purity, and self of the *Nirvāṇa[-sūtra]*; hence the four sections below refute them: The first, the seventh [door of] the accumulation of the three sufferings, has only deluded suffering without true bliss. The second, the eighth [door of] the arising and cessation of conditions, has no virtue of permanence. The third, the ninth [door of] the bondage of arising and cessation, is only defiled bondage without the virtue of purity. The fourth, the tenth [door of] accord with non-existence and exhaustion: because it accords with existence, it does not transcend the world, and thus lacks the virtue of self.
