Regarding the commentary's statement, "This is precisely the Laṅkāvatāra's reproach of what was not asked": this refers to Bodhisattva Mahāmati raising one hundred and eight questions, saying: "My name is Mahāmati, / thoroughly versed in the Great Vehicle. / Now with one hundred and eight topics, / I respectfully inquire of the Supreme among Honoured Ones." Below he asks: "How is one's mindfulness purified? / How does it increase thought by thought?", etc. Having listed the questions, the Buddha praised him as excellent, took up the questions, and then reproached him for not asking exhaustively, saying: "The Sumeru mountains and earth, / the measurements of the great oceans, suns, and moons, / sentient beings of lower, middle, and upper [realms]— / how many atomic particles are in each of their bodies? / How many dust particles are in each realm? / How many bows are there in number? / In a cubit, a pace, a krośa, / a half-yojana, and a yojana? / Up to saying: These are what should be spoken of, / why must you ask about other matters? / Śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, / Buddhas, and the Supreme Sons: / how many are there in each of their bodies? / Why do you not ask about this?" Explication: This is precisely reproaching what was not asked.
