疏「別中十相為九差別」者，總科也。束九為三，初六隨法義分別；次二就人分別，以論云「聲聞菩薩故」；後一約行以辨其根。初中又三：初三淨根、第四染根、後二通染淨。

Regarding the commentary's phrase “Within the distinctions, ten characteristics form nine differences,” this is an overall outline. The nine are gathered into three: the first six are distinguished according to the doctrinal meaning of phenomena; the next two are distinguished with respect to persons, because the treatise says “on account of śrāvakas and bodhisattvas”; the last one discerns their faculties based on practice. Within the first group there are also three: the first three are pure faculties, the fourth is defiled faculties, and the latter two apply to both defiled and pure.
