The commentary states: "Proximate[ly], it retroactively concludes the preceding text on advancing virtue." The preceding sūtra from "Toward the wisdom of all dharmas, one should only securely abide and not measure" downward is the text on advancing virtue. Now there are eleven [lines]; such first and last lines represent the overarching meaning. The first line clarifies that the preceding are all Samantabhadra's practices; the last clarifies that the preceding are all for gathering sentient beings; the middle nine lines gather the preceding advancing of virtue into nine sections: (1) "thus perfecting the bodhisattva realm" is the preceding sūtra's three lines from "one should inquire about the Tathāgata's Buddha-dharma" downward, because among the three lines, the first is seeking the Buddha-dharma above, and the second is transforming sentient beings below, both being the bodhisattva's realm; (2) "thus penetrating the path of emancipation" is the preceding three lines from "one should contemplate all dharmas as completely like an illusion" downward, because being like an illusion and like an echo are all without essential nature, which is the dharma of emancipation; (3) "thus upholding all Buddha-dharmas of the three periods of time" is the preceding three lines from "one should know the vow-power of all Buddhas" downward; (4) "thus contemplating all gates of omniscience" is the preceding three lines from "one should constantly and securely abide in the equal dharmadhātu" downward; (5) "thus contemplating the unchanging dharmas" is the preceding two lines from "one should not discriminate the Buddhas" downward; (6) "thus clarifying and purifying supreme resolute intention" is the preceding eight lines from "one should clearly understand the worldly deeds" downward, because the eight lines are all supreme resolute intention; (7) "thus having faith and understanding toward all Tathāgatas" is the preceding three lines from "deeply generating faith and understanding toward all Buddhas" downward; (8) "thus understanding the Buddha's vast, great power" is the preceding four lines from "rescuing sentient beings from the vast realm down to fulfilling the perfections"; (9) "thus having a resolute mind free from obstruction" is the preceding four lines from "so-called drawing near to omniscience" downward. The final line, "thus generally concluding the gathering of sentient beings," has already been explained above; it is to be correlated by analogy with the preceding sections.
