Regarding the commentary's statement, "Therefore the sūtra says: 'Cognition grasping neither existence nor non-existence, one gives rise to great compassion'": this is the second [section], citing testimony, which is the verse in praise of the Buddha by Mahāmati in the first [fascicle] of the Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra. That sūtra praises the Buddha's full comprehension of the three natures. The first verse says:
"The world is free from arising and ceasing,
Like flowers in empty space;
Cognition grasping neither existence nor non-existence,
One gives rise to great compassion."
This clarifies comprehension of the imagined [nature]. The next verse says:
"All dharmas are like an illusion,
Far removed from mind and consciousness;
Cognition grasping neither existence nor non-existence,
One gives rise to great compassion.
Far removed from annihilationism and eternalism,
The world is constantly like a dream;
Cognition grasping neither existence nor non-existence,
One gives rise to great compassion."
These two verses above clarify comprehension of the dependent [nature]. Next, another verse says:
"Knowing that persons and dharmas are without self,
Afflictions and the cognizable
Are ever pure and signless,
One gives rise to great compassion."
This verse clarifies comprehension of the consummate [nature]. Furthermore, following the intention of the Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra, these verses above show that the Buddha is endowed with the three bodies: namely, comprehending the imagined accomplishes the transformation body; comprehending the dependent accomplishes the reward body; and comprehending the consummate accomplishes the dharmakāya. The lower halves of all four verses are identical; the present sūtra directly cites the lower half of the "like an illusion" [verse] under the dependent [nature], while the lower half of the "like a dream" [verse] will be cited further in the dream-like patience.
