Regarding the Commentary's 'Moduoluo': it is also called Motouluo (Mathurā), which is also in the territory of Central India. As for 'the fourth fascicle of the Record of the Western Regions': that record calls it the kingdom of Shūtúluó (Śūra / Mathurā), and in the record it does not speak of the conditions concerning peacocks. Regarding 'there are stūpas of Śāri[putra] and others': 'and others' includes the stūpas of Mahāmaudgalyāyana and Pūrṇa. Regarding 'to the north of the monastery there is a cliff' and so forth: the record states, 'Traveling five or six li east from the city, one arrives at a mountain saṅghārāma, where hollowed cliffs serve as chambers and natural valleys serve as gates; it was built by the Venerable Upagupta (in Chinese, Close Protection). Within it is a stūpa of the Tathāgata's fingernails. Between the cliffs north of the saṅghārāma is a stone chamber, over twenty feet high and over thirty feet wide, filled with four-inch fine counting-sticks accumulated inside. When the Venerable Upagupta preached the Dharma to transform and guide people, only when husband and wife both attained the fruit of arhatship would he drop one stick; if they were from different chambers or separate clans, even if they attained realization, it was not recorded.'
