Fourth: the mental karma of appearance. Regarding the Commentary's statement "Apophatic expression with regard to essence" and so forth: this explains this section of the sūtra. The text of the Commentary has three parts: first, a general explanation of the intent of the text; second, a separate account of divergent explanations; third, reconciling them to return to the fundamental school. Now for the first: Mind is the king, and essence is discerned in terms of the king. Wisdom is the associate, and function is clarified in terms of the associate. As for essence, cataphatic expression does not reach it, so there is only apophatic expression; as for function, its characteristics can be illuminated, so one temporarily relies on cataphatic expression. Yet function also has apophatic expression, because it is identical with essence and without measure. If one were exclusively apophatic, there would be no means to reveal the wondrous; hence one temporarily relies on cataphatic expression to discern the profound ultimate. As for saying "temporarily relies": it means relying on the associate to reveal the king, and relying on function to reveal essence. Furthermore, both function and mental associates have an apophatic sense; here, one merely temporarily relies on the cataphatic to reveal the profound.
