Regarding the commentary's statement, "This has a profound intent" downward, the commentary provides a reconciliatory explanation, which answers his question. Herein are five [points]: First, it universally clarifies that it is for the sake of practice, so at the beginning there are the ten faiths. Second, from "The rank of equal enlightenment" downward, it explains the reason for not separately opening equal enlightenment. Although it adduces three meanings, it takes the third as opening it separately, yet it is merely subsumed within the sixth, the perfection of cause. Third, from "If so, then here, relying on the words" downward, it presents the rescue position of the Kanding, which seeks to make the beginning a questioning about the ten abodes. Fourth, from "This objection is especially flawed" downward, the present commentary refutes the text he cited as failing to grasp the intent of the text. Fifth, from "Not investigating this purport" downward, it concludes with a rebuke. "Relying on" (yuan) means citing. Citing texts inappropriately, the doctrinal purport is completely contrary; therefore above it judged that he did not understand a single phrase, taking faith as abodes, which shows he did not understand faith, nor did he understand abodes; taking abodes as practices, which shows he did not understand practices, nor did he understand abodes, and so forth. Hence regarding this single chapter of the sūtra he did not understand a single phrase. Regarding the commentary's citation, "Li Ying says, 'Clouds arose with two hundred questions,'" and so forth: he had praises for the nine assemblies, and for the eighth assembly he said, "The Dharma gate will take its seat again, / the Dharma rain pours down even more; / two hundred questions like a suspended river, / two thousand replies poured out as from a jar. / One mind exhausts the ocean of nature, / ten thousand practices shine in simultaneous cultivation; / the five ranks' causes are fulfilled and completed, / the eight marks' fruits are fully rounded." Now it briefly cites two lines, and furthermore changes his words "suspended river" to "clouds arose."
