Major Section Five: Setting forth the loss of benefit. The Commentary states: "Now first, Śāri[putra]": as for the disciples, ancient and new translations differ, and here we mostly follow the Tripiṭaka Master Kumārajīva. Regarding "egret" (qiūlù): the Mahāyāna master says, "It is the mockingbird (hundred-tongues bird), also called the spring oriole." Ancient masters citing the sūtra also say, "Because his mother's eloquence was like that bird." Here it is the old Sanskrit; newly it is called Śāriputra, 'putra' meaning son. Also, 'śāri' is translated as body, because the mother had a fine physical appearance. Or 'śāri' is said to mean pearl/jewel, because the mother's marks of acute intelligence resided in the pupils of her eyes. Both derive their appellation from the mother. The Ekottarika-āgama says: "Among my disciples in the Buddha's Dharma, the foremost in infinite wisdom and in resolving doubts is Śāriputra." Fascicle forty-one of the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa calls him "the disciple to the Tathāgata's left; his father's name was Upatiṣya."
