In the commentary, “Second, da,” this states the sūtra. From “The second of that sūtra…” onward, the commentary has five parts: 1. explaining according to the Five Syllables [Sūtra]; 2. from “Now saying da…” onward, examining and explaining the present da; 3. “Such as, namely, boundless differences,” which reconciles it with the sūtra; 4. from “It should be that the translator…” onward, reconciling the aberrant and correct forms. Regarding “the shapes of the characters being close,” we now demonstrate the two Indic shapes: da [𭙉] and ra [𭘂]. These two are slightly close, and their sounds are easily confused because they share a rhyming ending. 5. From “If one follows being free from defilement…” onward, it properly reconciles and explains the sūtra text by means of the syllable ra, because across the various sūtras the meaning of the second syllable is mostly identical. The Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā states: “The syllable ra, because one awakens to all phenomena being free from defilements and impurities.” The Fangguang states: “Second, ra is the appearance of impurity; in all phenomena there is no defilement.” The Guangzan states: “It is the gate of ra: phenomena are free from defilements and impurities.” The Vajraśekhara states: “Ra, because all phenomena are free [from defilement].” The Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] states: “Ra can destroy greed, anger, and delusion, speaking the true Dharma, and also has the meaning of destroying defilements and impurities.” The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: “If one hears the syllable ra, one immediately follows its meaning and knows the characteristic of all phenomena being free from impurities, because rajas means ‘impurity’ in this language.” In the above sūtras, the second syllable ra consistently shares the meaning of being free from impurities; therefore, there is no doubt.
