Regarding the Commentary's "Above, the temporal aspect was explained" and so forth: this is the second section, explaining the meaning of achieving buddhahood. Within this there are two parts: first, a summary statement connecting to what preceded; second, from "The Hīnayāna" downward, specifically clarifying the five teachings. First, as for "The thirty-four minds of the Hīnayāna": this is as stated in fascicle eighty-two of the *Vibhāṣā*. The "Chapter on Faculties" in the *Kośa* says: "Tradition states that a bodhisattva becomes a buddha with thirty-four minds." As for the "thirty-four minds": there are sixteen minds of the path of seeing, namely the eight patiences and eight cognitions, transcending attachment to the Peak of Existence. There are eighteen mental moments, namely cutting off the afflictions of the Peak of Existence, consisting of nine uninterrupted paths and nine paths of liberation. These eighteen, added to the previous sixteen, make thirty-four. All bodhisattvas definitely first attain freedom from attachment at the stage of nothingness and only then enter the path of seeing, without needing further to cut off the afflictions of the lower stages; they cut off solely the afflictions of the single stage of the Peak of Existence, becoming a buddha in a single sitting with just thirty-four minds.
