Regarding the passage under "Central theme of the second assembly": the commentary's text has two parts. First, structuring the sūtra according to the four divisions to clarify the central theme and direction; second, discussing the central theme according to specific classifications. Now, in the first part, there are again two: first, "If viewed generally..." and so forth is also called viewing from afar. Because it serves to accomplish the fruit of Buddhahood, it is viewing from afar; because it is fully endowed with the virtues of understanding and practice, it is general. Understanding is "Questions and Clarifications," practice is "Purified Conduct," and virtue is "Xianshou." Second, viewing nearby toward the ten abodes, it is therefore viewing from nearby. It should also be named specific, taking the preceding subsumption of stages as general. "Subsumption of stages" means that the fulfilled mind of the ten faiths suddenly subsumes all stages; here, this exclusively accomplishes the ten abodes. The Renwang does not separate out the ten faiths, subsuming them within the ten abodes, because faith is that which accomplishes, and abode is that which is accomplished.
