Fifth, directly explaining the text. The Commentary says: "Like an eyelash" is entirely from the Kośa. The verse says: "Just as placing an eyelash / on the palm of the hand goes unfelt by a person, / yet placed upon the eyeball / it causes extreme suffering and discomfort; / an ordinary worldling is like the palm of the hand, / not perceiving the eyelash that is the suffering of conditioning; / a wise one is like an eyeball, / perceiving it and giving rise to extreme disgust and dread." From "and furthermore with suffering" and so forth, this is chapter 1 of the Lotus Sūtra, which says: "Not seeking the Buddha of great power, / nor the Dharma that severs suffering, / they enter deeply into various erroneous views, / desiring to abandon suffering with suffering. / For the sake of these sentient beings, / he gives rise to the mind of great compassion."
