Fifth, "being adept in one's own and others' tenets without recklessly refuting them": former scholars, in citing sūtras and treatises and refuting others' tenets, regardless of whether nature or characteristics, mostly failed to exhaust the beginning and the end, recklessly citing and recklessly refuting. Or they frequently used the characteristics of dharmas, yet dismissed them all as provisional; or they cited the provisional to explain the real, yet failed to distinguish the broad from the restricted, thereby confusing and misleading later students. Some took what was correct in the past to be wrong, or again took the provisional to be real. Now I reverse this: whether refuting or citing, I first present the other's meaning, ensuring nature and characteristics suffer no loss, exhausting their bearing and substance; thereafter I set forth this principle, resolving and deciding with clarity, so that students do not cling to traces and lose the tenets, nor mistakenly negate ancient meanings, nor need to labor in wide reading and searching elsewhere.
