Regarding the commentary's phrase "The *Laṅkāvatāra* says..." and following: this adduces scriptural proof. Fascicle two of that sūtra states: "Furthermore, Mahāmati! The Tathāgata empowers with two kinds of supernatural power, [whereby] bodhisattva-mahāsattvas pay homage to all Buddhas and listen to and receive the questioned meaning. What are the two kinds of supernatural power empowerment? They are the supernatural power of presenting all bodily forms and faces to speak Dharma for the sake of those in correct reception of samādhi, and the supernatural power of placing hands upon their crowns. Mahāmati! Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas at the initial bodhisattva bhūmi abide in the Buddha's supernatural power, namely by entering the Bodhisattva Great Vehicle Illuminating Samādhi. Entering this samādhi, all Buddhas of the worlds of the ten directions, through supernatural power, present all bodily forms and faces to speak Dharma for them—as with the crowning of Bodhisattva Vajragarbha and other bodhisattva-mahāsattvas endowed with accomplishments of such characteristics." Further down it says: "Mahāmati! If bodhisattva-mahāsattvas were able to explain eloquently apart from the Buddha's supernatural power, then all ordinary worldlings would likewise be able to speak." Explication: The present commentary cites by meaning: it directly quotes the later text of converse explanation while also incorporating the previously listed two characteristics.
