Regarding the commentary's phrase "However, the essence of the ten abodes..." and so forth: now, if one sets up thematic headings, the ten abodes may be briefly distinguished into five headings: first, explaining the names; second, bringing forth the essence; third, discerning the characteristics; fourth, determining the stages; fifth, miscellaneous analytical categories. Distinguishing the present sūtra, the commentary is fully equipped with them all. In "names", there are general and specific: the general is as at the beginning of the chapter, and the specific names are as expounded in the root section. "Bringing forth the essence" is the present text. "Discerning the characteristics" is the sūtra text. "Determining the stages" will be explained immediately below. "Miscellaneous analytical categories" are contained in the texts before and after. Here, in bringing forth the essence, there are briefly three levels.
