In the Commentary, regarding "Second, contrasting before the grounds and upon the grounds": Master Huiyuan says, "Second, contrasting in terms of stages: prior to understanding and practice, cultivating practice in accordance with the teaching is called āgama. From the first ground upward, transcending speech and tallying with reality is spoken of as realization." In the Commentary, "As in the entreaty below, praising the assembly by taking hearing, thinking, cultivating, and so forth prior to the grounds as purity of teaching..." and so on: this refers to the text in the entreaty where Vimukticandra praises the assembly as capable of hearing. The sūtra states: "Well-purified profound mind"—this phrase is the general. The nine specific phrases below state: "well-cleansed reflections, well-cultivated practices, well-gathered auxiliaries to the path, being well able to draw near to hundreds of thousands of koṭis of Buddhas, and accomplishing immeasurable roots of goodness of merit." These five specific phrases are purity of teaching. Next it states: "Renouncing delusion and confusion, free from defilement, having deep-minded faith and understanding, and not following other teachings within the Buddha-dharma are called purity of realization." The subcommentary explains: This is because the preceding five phrases belong to [the stages] prior to the grounds.
