55.32

Regarding the Commentary's stating from "If so, all Buddhas have already previously" onward: this is the second, resolving the follow-up objection. The meaning is: because the host Buddha was not complete in body and speech, he now wishes to complete them; but since the retinue Buddhas were already complete, how can they empower again? Regarding "empowering again," the sūtra states, "All the Buddhas of the ten directions were also likewise," and "through the spiritual power of all Buddhas, they spoke verses." Regarding the Commentary's stating from "previously was merely empowerment" onward: the reply. This is also the differentiation in empowerment and requesting. This passage also contains Master Huiyuan's first: differences in the empowering Buddhas. Previously, in terms of what was signified, they were all empowered by the Vajragarbha Buddhas of the ten directions; now, it merely says the ten directions, signifying universal directions. Furthermore, Vairocana also shines upon the Dharma-expounding bodhisattvas of the ten directions; thus we know that Buddhas of different names can equally empower together.
