Regarding the first vow: from 'first, giving rise to an essential commitment' onwards, it explains these three phrases. The treatise explains them in the concluding section later. Bringing them forward here, the treatise and the sūtra differ in two phrases: the second says 'great upāya', and the third says 'great practice'. However, each and every phrase has three segments. For example, the first phrase says 'giving rise to an essential commitment', which is the commentary bringing out the intent; second, 'it says: such great vows', which cites the sūtra as proof; third, 'because of seeking meaning according to the mind', which is the treatise's explanation. The latter two are both like this. As for 'thus we know that this vow is also itself practice' in the commentary, the treatise states: 'because of giving rise to these three practices'.
