Regarding the Commentary's statement: '1. The first phrase...' and so forth: this explains the fourth wrong view. Flattery (śaṭhya) means that, in order to deceive others, one feigns false deportment with tortuous deceit as its nature, having the function of obstructing non-flattery and resisting instruction. That is, a flatterer deceives others, deceitfully conforming to worldly expedients and falsely making up methods to win others' approval or hide their own faults, being unfit for the correct instruction of teachers and friends. Deception (māyā) means that, to acquire gain and praise, one falsely displays virtues with fraudulence as its nature, having the function of obstructing non-pretension and [supporting] wrong livelihood. That is, a deceiver harbors scheming intentions and displays much unreality due to matters of wrong livelihood. Explanation: The above is the text of the Śāstra. One clearly knows that these two are false appearing as real. However, both of these defilements take a portion of greed and ignorance as their essence.
