The Commentary states: "In the causal characteristic of the present treatise [and following]" is the third part, reconciling and explaining the two treatises. Question: The characteristics of cause and fruition differ; how can this cause be that fruition? Answer: Now, the fruition consciousness is taken as the cause of name-and-form, not the seed taken as the cause of the manifest consciousness; therefore, the names differ but the substance is one. Therefore, among the three characteristics here, the first two are both the fruition characteristic of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha. The fruition characteristic of this treatise is naturally the fruition characteristic of name-and-form. The statement "Although the designations established differ, both are applicable to cause and fruition" clarifies that citing those three characteristics does not serve to corroborate these three; it merely clarifies that this consciousness applies to fruition as well. The cause is as in the preceding passage.
