Regarding the commentary's passage beginning "Now, relying upon the power of principle and teaching, I briefly open four gates": This is the third part, opening chapters for specific explanation. Within this, it first posits and then explains. Now, this is the first. There might be an objection: Since only at the ultimate stage can it be known, how can ordinary sentiments dare to peer into the great teaching? Therefore this is said: relying upon the teaching and the principle, for the sacred teachings permit it. Thus the Nirvāṇa Sūtra states: "An ordinary being fully bound by defilements is capable of knowing the secret treasury of the Tathāgata." The "Chapter on Vairocana" states: "Just as by relying on the illumination of the sunlight / one turns back to see the solar disk, / so I, by the light of the Buddha's wisdom, / see the path traversed by the Buddha." That is, by relying on the Buddha's teaching, one is capable of understanding the teaching. It is simply the wisdom of reverent inference, known through faith and understanding.
