Regarding the commentary's "If one says that in the second period..." onward, this refutes the second period. Within this there are three parts: first, refuting the claim that it expounded only emptiness; second, refuting the claim that it did not reveal eternal abiding; and third, concluding by establishing the correct meaning. In the first part, there are again two: first, citing the institution of precepts to show that existence was taught after the twelve years. Thus the Vinaya sūtra says: "Guard well the speech of your mouth, / Purify your own mind's intention, / Do not commit evils with the body; / Pure are the paths of these three karmas. / To be able to attain such practice / Is the path of the Great Sage. / This is the Prātimokṣa sūtra that Śākyamuni Tathāgata expounded during the twelve years for the monks who were free of infractions. From this time onward, it was extensively differentiated and expounded." This makes it clear that only after the twelve years were the extensive precepts instituted, and the extensive precepts are precisely the elucidation of existence.
