Regarding the Commentary's statement "first, painful matters" and so on: first, whips, canes, and beatings; second, depleting wealth and provisions; third, separation of family and relatives; fourth, chains and shackles bound to the body; fifth, walls and patrol guards. In the doctrinal explanation of the five, the first three sufferings are: first, the suffering of illness; second, the suffering of not getting what one seeks; third, the suffering of separation from what is loved. Regarding "fourth, the difficulty of morality": the latter two are karmas. The first is the karma of breaking morality; the upper two realms are free from shamelessness and lack of conscience, so they do not give rise to breaking morality. "Fifth, the difficulty of views" corresponds to the karma of wrong views, because ignorance is their root.
