Regarding the commentary’s [statement], “Discussing its meaning in detail, there are many different grades,” when the above four aspects are intertwined and correlated with each other, they result in many grades. For instance, in terms of the object of killing: the object is one layer; if accompanied by a weighty mind, that makes two layers; further, if weighty at all three times, that makes three layers; and if one further instructs others to kill, that makes four layers. The rest may be inferred by analogy. As for the statement, “For unwholesome actions, it can be understood in reverse,” this has two meanings: First, the general aspect: previously it was only in terms of non-killing, whereas now it concerns killing and so forth; second, as in the single object of killing: previously, not killing mosquitoes and gnats was superior wholesome and so forth, whereas now, killing mosquitoes and gnats is inferior evil, killing beasts is middling evil, and killing humans is superior evil, and so on. The quotation of the sixtieth fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi to explain unwholesome actions will be clarified below.
