Regarding the commentary's phrase "in the cultivation above" onward: this is the second part, demonstrating it in correlation with the text. "Each of the eight lower concentrations has the latter two" means that being separated from desires and evil, unwholesome dharmas, and so forth, is the mental application of the culmination of preparatory training; abiding in the first dhyāna and so forth is the mental application that is the fruit of the culmination of preparatory training.
