Regarding the commentary's "when the marks of defilement have not yet perished, speaking of purity in contrast to defilement is also called grasping purity": this resolves a hidden objection. The objection says: On the previous ground, when contemplating pure tathatā, conceits of defilement may be allowed to arise, but how could there be a conceit of purity? Therefore, it now answers: regarding the tathatā contemplated previously, one is capable while entering contemplation, but upon emerging from contemplation, as occurrences take place, one still sees marks of defilement. Since the marks of defilement still exist, in contrast to the suffering and origination of defilement, there still arises the view of the marks of purity—cessation and the path; therefore, this conceit exists. Although there are three tiers of rescues against the objection, the marks of both defilement and purity still persist.
