On the commentary passage "Now on this bhūmi, refuting characteristics to tend toward quiescence is called the equality of emptiness": how could it be that only intrinsic nature is absent? Characteristics also do not remain. Hence the sūtra text says, "Being without characteristics and without essence, they are therefore equal." Not only are characteristics of existence refuted, but characteristics of emptiness are also relinquished; only then is it the principle of the equality of true emptiness. The meaning corresponds to conforming kṣānti; raising the latter subsumes the former, so the meaning covers the fourth and fifth [bhūmis].
