Regarding the commentary's phrase, "The Daśabhūmika-śāstra states: 'having subdued māra-deeds'": saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are precisely the māra-deeds of a bodhisattva. Saṃsāra is the practice of ordinary people; nirvāṇa is the practice of the two vehicles. Therefore Master Dao]sheng said: "The roads of the three realms are obstructed, and the path of the two vehicles is perilous; the five hundred yojanas are the evil realms of a bodhisattva, exceedingly difficult to cross. Now surpassing the intent of the sages and also transcending worldly feelings, one can thus subdue them." Furthermore, the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: "Except for the true characteristic of all phenomena, everything is a māra-deed of a bodhisattva." Now, realizing prajñā can accord with the true characteristic, and therefore transcends māra-deeds.
