Regarding the Commentary's statement, "Because the tathāgatagarbha embraces everything without exterior, it is called 'great'": Master Yuan said: "'Great' means vast and broad. 'Vast' means that within the essence of the true consciousness, the Buddha-dharmas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges throughout the dharmadhātu are universally contained; they arise in mutual correspondence with the equality of their shared essence, with not a single dharma separately maintaining its own nature; therefore it is called empty. Conforming to the dharmadhātu, there is no gateway in which it is not present; hence it is called great emptiness."
