Regarding the commentary's "Furthermore, the above three emptynesses" onward: selecting the doctrinal cognitions. The treatise says: 'In the Abhidharma, the gate of emptiness takes the truth of suffering as its object and subsumes the five aggregates; the gate of signlessness takes the cessation through deliberation (*pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha*) as its object; wishlessness takes the three truths as its object and subsumes the five aggregates. The three gates of the Mahāyāna universally take the real mark of all dharmas as their object. By using these three gates of liberation to contemplate the world, that itself is nirvāṇa.' Explanation: matching with the text, it is self-evident. As for the statement "The rest is as in the *Upadeśa* (*Dazhidulun*)": the treatise says, 'The sūtra speaks of one gate to nirvāṇa; now in speaking of three, although the dharma is one, its meanings are threefold. Furthermore, one should cross over three kinds of obstacles, namely excessive craving, excessive views, and equal craving and views. For those with excessive views, one teaches the gate of emptiness; for those with excessive craving, one teaches the gate of wishlessness; for those with equal craving and views, one teaches the gate of signlessness. That is, having no signs of male, female, and so forth severs craving; having no signs of oneness, difference, and so forth severs views—these are all remaining meanings therein.'
